Who You Are

You are independently motivated, physically fit, think outside the box and work well in a team environment. You employ a strong work ethic and an even better sense of humor. You enjoy working outdoors day in and day out, regardless of a downpour, blistering heat, or mind-numbing cold. You aren’t bothered (mostly) by a swarm of mosquitos and black flies, in fact it might even increase your pace while collecting field data. You learn quickly, are open to new ways of doing tasks, are eager to learn from all of your coworkers and their experiences, and strive for outstanding production.

Where We Are

Welcome to the Beautiful town of Smithers, Enjoy the quality of life Northern B.C. has to offer in a vibrant mountain town of five thousand people. With hiking, fishing, skiing, mountain biking, farmer’s markets, music festivals, and two breweries, you’ll have no problem finding things to do on your days off. Even though much of our work is in camp, you will still be lucky enough to see rare places all over the province, tucked into endless bush, and have co-workers to enjoy it with.

Common Questions…

  • No experience in the forestry sector is no problem, as long as you have a passion for working outside and a drive to learn, we’re happy to have you! Many of our staff over the years have started at Silvicon and grown into professional foresters, forest technicians, or gained valuable skills just by being open to learning and working hard.

  • Absolutely, we offer training in all aspects of the work we do. You can expect senior staff to take the time to teach you how to do each task in an efficient, safe manner. Our company takes safety very seriously and will ensure you are taught how to operate ATVs, snowmobiles, manage first aid incidents, respond to emergencies and drive on forest service roads.

For committed and driven field staff, there are always opportunities to cross-train into other departments, be sent to external training courses, and grow your abilities within the forestry sector. If you show drive, you will be encouraged to follow it.

  • A typical field day at Silvicon starts at 7 am, either from our office in Smithers or wherever your camp shift may be. Once you have made a plan with your project manager or team leader for the day, you’ll load up the company truck assigned to you and head into the field. Days can vary in length, some may be short and some may be long, but we always try to plan according to any needs of the group and stay open to changes in the plan. We work rain or shine, so good gear is a must, and you’ll definitely want it when you’re swimming through wet brush or doing silviculture surveys in a plantation without shade.

In the evening at camp, many of the staff members like to share dinners (Groceries are covered by Silvicon each week), play card games, relax by a fire, or go fishing at a nearby lake. In the summer, you can enjoy the sunshine until 10 pm! All of our camps are run from cabins, logging camps, hotels, air bnb, or travel trailers. So when it's pouring rain outside, you aren’t forced to make your food under a tarp, being eaten by bugs after a damp sleep in a tent.

  • Yes at Silvicon we encourage professional development and support our employees to reach their academic goals.

  • At Silvicon, we offer our staff members health benefits once their four-month probation period is complete. We understand the stresses forestry work puts on the body, and encourage staff to see physiotherapists, stretch and keep up a healthy lifestyle so they can avoid injury. If an employee is having issues with a repetitive, or old injury, we do our best to accommodate tasks that will not worsen the issue.

  • Many of our staff members are dog owners and bring their dogs to work in the bush. Bringing your pet is just as much of a responsibility as it is a bonus to fieldwork, as we have strict safety policies about pets traveling in work trucks and camp limitations. Employees that bring their pets are expected to prioritize the safety of all workers and maintain their workday productivity. Pet allowance is on a case-by-case basis and is subject to change.
